I run Smiley Dogg: two shops in Cork city, over twenty tattoo artists and three piercers. I still tattoo every week, because stepping away was never the plan.

Realism, in black and grey and in colour. Portraits above everything else.

What I tattoo

I work in realism, in black and grey and in colour. What I care about most is contrast. I keep it soft and let the piece breathe, so it still reads well in ten years instead of turning into a dark patch.

Portraits are where I spend most of my time. They're unforgiving: get an eye or the corner of a mouth slightly wrong and the whole face stops being the person. That difficulty is the reason I keep going back to them.

If you're bringing me a portrait, the photo matters more than anything else. Good light, high resolution, sharp. I'd rather work from an honest snapshot than a beautiful photo that's blurry.

My story

I'm from Valencia. I started tattooing in 2012 and got my first job in a professional studio there in 2014.

That same year I came to Smiley Dogg for the first time, as a guest artist. Ireland wasn't part of any plan. I came over for a few weeks, liked the shop, and came back again.

In 2016 I came back with a different idea: buying it. I spent a few months working here first, watching how the books filled and how the studio actually ran, before committing to anything. In October 2016 I bought the business and moved my life to Cork.

Since then I've been building it. Smiley Dogg is now two shops in Cork city, twelve resident tattoo artists, around eight regular collaborators and three piercers. I've put as much of the last decade into the studio itself, into how it's run and what it stands for, as into tattooing. But I've never stopped tattooing, and I don't intend to. Running a shop you don't work in is a fast way to lose the plot.

Outside of it, I'm not great at switching off. Sometimes I run, others I go to the gym, and the only time the studio properly leaves my head is when I'm away somewhere with my wife or visiting my hometown in Spain.
