How to choose a tattoo shop and artist
Sam Smith

If you’re busy finding out how to safely choose a tattoo shop and artist, you’ll find that artists and shops alike each offer completely different things, including the art style, the experience, and more. For starters, keep in mind that any tattoo that you choose should be one that you’ll be happy with for the rest of your life.

The last thing you want is to get a tattoo and then end up regretting it years later because you were in too much of a rush, or because you didn’t feel like doing your research regarding the shop and artist you go for. To that end, spend some time thinking about what it is that you really want.

First Things First – What do you want to safely choose?

First, you need to figure out certain things, such as whether you want your tattoo to be small or large. There are pros and cons to both approaches. For instance, if you want a tattoo that can easily be hidden, then a small tattoo would be ideal, and it could be put somewhere at the top of your neck.

On the other hand, if you’re going for something that will be noticed a lot, such as a big tattoo on your arm, then going for a large tattoo is probably the best way to go. Knowing the kind of tattoo artist and shop you want is all based on first knowing what the tattoo itself should be, as not all artists or shops offer the same. It’s an art, after all!

Be Intricate!

Choosing a tattoo artist begins with knowing what type of designs appeal to you. This is important for a couple of reasons. First, if you don’t like the designs that an artist suggests, then you can always change them, but if you don’t feel comfortable with the person themselves, you may not feel comfortable phrasing your opinion.

Most tattoo artists are going to suggest some type of design that you can choose to change up a bit. However, you also need to know which part of your tattoo is going to be the most difficult, as this is what your tattoo artist and/or shop should be able to do! So, be intricate about choosing the right person with the right skills.

Reach Out and Be Informed

Once you know what kind of design you want, the next thing you need to do is check the Instagram accounts of various tattoo parlours and also their resident artists. This should be your first option, especially if you’re new to tattooing. This is a way for you to look at real reviews of the work of artists and to see the experiences that customers have had (in the comments, usually).

This is also usually a good way to get started with the conversation– you can send them a picture of what you have in mind on Instagram or contact them via their website, and can see from there, whether or not you are a good fit. Reviews and customer experience say a lot, it’s always a great way to determine if that Tattoo Parlour is the correct one for you!

Finally, make sure that the place you go to is somewhere that you like, and somewhere you feel at home in. Don’t go anywhere that is clearly unhygienic, and feel free to ask about the hygiene itself. A tattoo shop should give you good vibes when you enter!
